Coogee Tournament, Sunday 8th November 2009

Fifty players attended the 2009 Coogee tournament on Sunday 8th November at the South Perth Senior Citizens Centre.

An ASPA committee meeting was held at lunch time and it was decided that if players are not checked in by 9.15am ( when a 9.30am start) then they will be withdrawn from the playing list and the computer will redraw the divisions. If you are held up on the road and phone in on the emergency number then that will be accepted.

Remember the next tournament on 29th November is the 10 game Summer Marathon and check in time is earlier - 8.30am and no later than 8.45am for a 9.00am start.

DOLPHIN was the word for the day and dolphin prizes were given out each game.

Yokine Tournament - Sunday 20th September, 2009

Due to the absence of Maureen, our reporter extraordinaire, from this tournament there is no offical report to accompany the results.
If anyone would like to provide an account of anything noteworthy during the tournament, please feel free to email us at scrabblewa@hotmail.com, and I shall post it on the site.

One thing I will relay, which I thought particularly unusual...

In Game 1, Di Ward was playing Joy Deans at the table next to me. I overheard Joy congratulate Dianne on a word with a lovely score of 131. The word was ORDINALS, and a 9-timer (triple-triple). After my game with Di, I also congratulated her on the lovely scoring word. "Thanks" Di relayed, "I had LADRONS on my rack, and could not play it on the board, when lo and behold, Joy played EUOI down, placing the "I" in the triple lane!"

My next game was against Joy Deans, and I could not believe my eyes when I looked at my rack - what was I holding? LADRONS! And the only place open on the board for me to play was through an "I" - I also would have been able to play ORDINALS! (Of course my score would have been in the 60's, certainly not as nice as Di's earlier score!) Unfortunately for me, it was Joy's turn and she covered the "I".  I thought this quite amusing, given the conversation I had with Di ten minutes earlier (and I doubt I would have seen either LADRONS or ORDINALS if she hadn't mentioned them!)

COURTESY OF MIKE CLARKE:
Has anyone looked up the meaning of the word GOTCHA in our wonderful reference work, the Collins Official Scrabble Dictionary? It defines GOTCHA
as An Australian word for a crocodile as in a "gotcha lizard".

Rockingham Tournament, Sunday 16th August 2009

Fifty players attended the 2009 Rockingham tournament, held at the Bowling Club on Sunday 16th August.

PENGUIN was the word for the day, the popular Penguin Island is not far from Rockingham.
A prize was given each game for the highest word, starting with a letter from Penguin.

PRAISES      68 THERESE NICHOLS
ETALONS     75 CAROL HUDSON
NESTERS     86 CORI LODDER
GOATIER     75 GLENYS LAWRIE
UNIVERSE   83 JENNY COETZEE
IDEAL          28 KATE HORAN
NIT              28 JOHN SALMON

With six wins each from seven games, three points was the margin between 'A' Winner Edie Mueller and runner-up Dianne Ward.  Faye Williams also had five wins, but a smaller margin total for third.  Dianne won High Game 562 and Faye High Word UNIFORMS 167. Earlier in the day Faye held the High Word score with EYEPOINT 149.  Edie won an unusual word prize for HAIRSTED (Scottish form of harvest).
Dianne played 4 bonus words in a game: UNPOSED, GLOATED, OUTSIDE, SHROVING.
OUTSIDE is the only one to make another word -TEDIOUS.
Henny Yates, 4th, played two consecutive bonus words; BLEACHER, FINESSE. Henny played 3 bonus words in another game: MEANIES, LOFTIER, DIETERS.
Henny, Glenys and Michael Clarke all had opening plays with: MELTIER 74, COMPETE 80, FRANKED 88. These words are orphans, so good opening fines.

This is correct....Fifi is the winner of 'B' Section with 6 wins and also winner of High Game 509. Fifi lost one game, to Brian Jones by 8.  It is just another furphy about her 'feast day today', no Saint Fifi in my Book of Saints Days!!  Joy Deans 5 wins and runner-up.
It was a black day for Aloma Pelham, she came dressed all in black and other than some bright Mickey & Mini cushions and little lucky ladybirds everywhere, her High Word QUEST 93 (good score for 5 letters) was her only good thing for the day. Allie Glynn played LAWINES (also LAUWINES) an avalanche, for unusual word winner.

'C' - The final game decided the placings. Valerie Beck was the WINNER, 6 wins, her only loss to runner-up Maureen Gill 5 wins. Rhonda Reynish just pipped Donna Sekkouah for 3rd, by 3 points.
Valerie took both the High Game 498 and High Word NOTCHERS 95, prizes.
Colin Hyde played 3 bonus words in a game -LUSTIER, CATTIEST, SNIFFLE. Colin won unusual word for TUSKERS.  John Finlay opened a game with TURNONS 66, his opponent did challenge it!

'D'- D is for Delys and it was Delys Carbon's day today, the winner with 6 wins and also winner of High Game 458 and High Word INQUEST 121. Runner-Up, 6 wins was Muriel Retford (Rockingham Club). Muriel was the person Delys lost to in game 2 by 33. Muriel lost her only  game to Eileen Wood by 33 in game 5.
Monday's birthday lady Lola Dunstan, won the unusual word with LARKING.
This group had the 'three sisters' playing, Wynne, Di and Ursula, all from the Rockingham Club.

THANK YOU to the Rockingham Club members for the yummy food and everything.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREETINGS going out to Lola, Glenys and Henny...all celebrating birthdays this week.

It is only a short break and on the second last day of winter, Sunday 30th August, we will be 'back across the boards' for the 8 game WA WINTER OPEN Tournament at South Perth.
Entries and queries to Glenys.

Valerie Beck, Winner of The President's Trophy, started the sixth game against Therese Nichols with 5 wins and finished the sixth game with 5 wins!  Margins also decided the minor placings, 5 players with 4 wins. Phil Burdge 2nd and Dawn Lawrie 3rd. Well done to Dawn, her first tournament since July last year, the grey nomad was travelling interstate for 6 months. Also making a 'yearly appearance' were Raewyn Benson and Anne Kelly, don't leave it so long between appearances next time ladies !
Raewyn won the High Word prize with 'CLEANED' 92 and Maureen Gill had the High Game score 410. Can you believe only 410 wins a high game prize? It was a day for 'low scores' in this group. Maureen was the only player in 'B' who listed consecutive bonus words in a game: POUNCED (also makes UNCOPED) & TONNERS (makes STONERN).
Ann Smith won the unusual word prize with the ten letter word 'PASTORALLY' - I am not sure what Ann added on to with this word.  Ann and Delys Carbon had the only drawn game, they are good friends, I am not sure if this was 'rigged'!!   I have just had a message from Delys about this game,it was not rigged!!.... this is her reply:

"I have to learn my lesson from the drawn game.... I went 3 minutes overtime after forgetting my clock three times...Let it run through her time as well!!!  So after me winning by 30 points at the end I had to take off 30 points for the 3 minutes!!!!! Darn!!!!!    I suppose it is a bit like hitting the wrong ball in golf...You don't do it again........ for awhile at least." ( as told by Delys)

WA State Championships, Sunday 31st May & Monday 1st June 2009

Congratulations Russell on a superb performance, 17 wins from the 18 game championship, our 2009 WA Champion. Russell's only loss was to Glenys Lawrie in game 4. In game 17 against Henny Yates, Russell went out and the scores were equal, unfortunately Henny had to give Russell 2 points so he had a close 4 point win!
High opening plays in 'A' on day 2: EDITION 70 Anne Stewart, PROGGED 80 Dianne Ward, Henny twice started   games with a bonus word, LODGERS 69 and DUSTIER 70.

'B' Winner Aloma Pelham was a game ahead for the final few games, the minor placings were decided by margins after the final game, three players finished with 12 wins, Cori Lodder with the higher margin for 2nd and Bettina Tonkin 3rd and Carol Hudson 4th.  High word SCENTING 140 was played by Esperance player, Bev Wilkinson.
Two players listed opening bonus plays on day 2; Jane Walker COORIES 80 and John Finlay BOATERS 68.

Delys Carbon 3rd and Birthday lady June Lewis had the only drawn game on Monday.
Players in this group travelled from Geraldton to Bunbury to attend.  Nurse Marge will shortly be travelling overseas  (voluntary position) to assist on a hospital ship attending to African women with incontinence problems. We wish you all the best Marge and a safe return to WA.

Melville Tournament - Sunday 17th May 2009

When players first arrived at the Melville Bowling Club, early on Sunday morning the 17th May, it was looking like a florist outlet!  The Melville Scrabble Club had gorgeous bunches of flowers as prizes, at the annual tournament attended by 67 players. One novice player was welcomed, Trish Schadeberg and from the Philippines, still in Perth after the Australian Scrabble Championship, Carmelita Maxwell's brother Samuel Espiritu, who played in 'B' division.

A few highlights from the day were:
'A' Winner Graham Bell played 3 consecutive bonus words in game 4; GOBLETS, AGUIZES, PENTICE.  A popular winner was Graham, the Freo chant started (by Fremantle Scrabble Club members) when he collected his prize.
Dianne Ward opened a game with LENITED 70.
Only one drawn game, Chris Dyson & Cathy Barrett in 'D' division.
Starting game 7, Ann Smith 'D' winner & Brian Jones 'B' winner both had 6 wins and were hoping to make it 7 for the day! June Lewis put a stop to Ann's winning run and Maureen Gill beat Brian by 11, Brian's margin was just 12 points higher than Joy Deans to grab first place, Joy runner-up.
Out of the 4 divisions, males took 5 placings, women the other 7.
A slim, trim and terrific Mike Clarke was looking fantastic today, well done Mike, take it easy now.
Young Will Jackson, 5 wins and 3rd in 'D' was on 'on fire' after his school holiday trip to Melbourne to attend the Youth Scrabble Coaching Clinic run by Karen Richards. So keen is Will he is returning in July to attend another camp.
Will's Grandmother, Lyn Ridsdale 'C' played VANESSID (a type of butterfly) (anagram AVIDNESS) and won an unusual word prize, what a brilliant find Lyn.
Other Unusual Word Winners were: 'A' - Edie Mueller VINIFY (convert into wine); 'B' -Maureen Gill TRIZONES ( areas comprising three zones); 'D' Ann Smith EPICURE (person who enjoys good food and drink) now that just sounds like Ann!
The highest word scored for the day was SHAPELY 120, played by Delys Carbon 'C'.
Cori Lodder 'B' played the lovely sounding PAVONES 111 ( peacocks).
John Finlay, runner-up to Jane Dalton in 'C' listed LACONIC (using only a few words, terse) on the unusual list, a great find with 2 C's - it also makes CONICAL. John's baby granddaughter, Rhiannon Watt, born the day after her Mother attended the Bunbury tournament, visited the club at lunch time with her parents Carolyn & Richard. What a little cutie she is, stacking on the weight and looked stunning in her 'going out' pink dress.

Five players listed playing 4 bonus words in a game:
Dianne Ward - FIANCEE (also makes FAIENCE),INVESTOR, RETAILER, REASONED.
Edie Mueller - SOAPIER, ISOLATED (makes 3 other words DIASTOLE, SODALITE, SOLIDATE), ENATIONS (makes SONATINE), BOOKINGS.

A double up with the high word score of -140 - Trudi Owens "PLACATED" and Aloma Pelham "LIVERIES".
Sally Martin won an unusual word prize for "FEDAYEEN", (in Arab states) a commando.
Five players listed 4 bonus words played in a game:

CAVITIES, FIREARMS, UNITINGS, SOCCERS- Faye Williams
TROELIE, DEFILERS, DENTARIA, SECRETIN -Sally Martin
SWEARERS, NOTIFIES, EARTHLY, ENDIRON - Glenys Lawrie
PELORIAN, NOONERS, TURGITE, HASTIER- Edie Mueller

Ten players played In the one day, 8 games 'PLATE Championship'.
The final game decided the top placings.
Winner, Maureen Gill with 6 wins, runner up, all the way from Esperance,Bev Wilkinson also 6 wins.  Anne Donnelly, normally operating the computer, played and finished 3rd.
Two novice players attended, Daniel Abela and his nephew Jordan Sun. Daniel won 4 games and the best novice prize.
It was thought a three way draw with the high word, 3 players scored 86 for words - after the announcement it was realised Richard Watt had scored 93 with "DEFENDS" and it was overlooked on the results sheet! That saved a few prizes!
Only a couple of words listed on the 'Plate' unusual word sheet so the prize went to Delys Carbon with "DEADING".

The full results and ratings will be forwarded to you when received.
The usual word of THANKS to all the helpers and support team.
