Game 1 413-278 EHLTXY?
Game 3 418-378 Close game. Got to play AZERTY for 56. Given a reprieve by finding the only bonus from ADINNOU, and correctly played the endgame where my opponent held AEGMMKU with scoring opportunities for K
Game 5 568-302 Got to play some nice words CEIMOUZ, EEILUY?+N, and only eight from CDIOPTY
Game 6 445-361 Correctly played the end game to minimise my opponent's score if they went out with a bonus with 9 tiles unseen ADEEGINST and a place for a G or S hook
Game 7 473-380 AACILO? and GROUSER+H helped me secure this win
Game 8 445-331 Tough game until by opponent misspelt ANNATTO
Game 9 382-359 I was able to nab the blank for a final rack of AAIILT? with scores at 350-351 I missed the bonus onto a Y, but went for the safe win where my opponent had DNRT left
Game 10 449-444 AIIPTTU got me ahead early, but a tough endgame ensued at scores 386-394 involving the unseen letters AEIJNNOSTUUVV and two 40+ spots for the J
Game 11 532-331 I got some nice early-game board synergy, before EEELRST+V and CEERSTU+A but missed a final rack AEEGIW?+G
Game 12 563-424 My opponent played a triple-triple from AEELMNS? after I played the only bonus from BCEILR?+C leaving the E in 7th.
Game 13 533-392 RIANCY+? and ACINORR helped secure this win
Game 16 361-357 Snuck this game in the last play, when my opponents end rack was ILUV
Game 18 445-355 Scores were grim 78-156 @ move 5 when i found one of the two bonuses from ACNNOTU

Question from Carolyn Watt and answered by Chris Hall.
Well done to Therese on her fabulous win as a novice... is her rating really now in the 1200s?
Carolyn asked a good question, and for those of you wondering the same thing, here’s an explanation:
WARNING: contains nerdspeak!
Calculating a novice’s rating is actually a whole lot of guesswork, mainly because of the limited amount of data to work with and the good old luck factor, which may or may not have accounted for some of their results. The ratings program attempts to find a rating for the novice that, when assumed to be their starting rating, produces an overall rating change of zero for the division when the results are processed. For one novice, this is relatively straightforward; when there are multiple novices in a division it can be quite complex.
When a novice wins (or loses) all their games, the question is: Just how good (or bad) are they? Fortunately, there is a floor of 500 in our rating system so no-one can ever be worse than that. As for winning all their games against a group of 600-rated players, well, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if someone rated 900-ish or above did that. But how far above?
You may be aware that you can work out your expected wins (W) at a tournament as 50%, plus one-twelfth of the difference between your starting rating (R) and the average starting rating (A) of your opponents, of the number of games played (N). Or, for the mathematically minded (remembering that multiplication and division take precedence over addition and subtraction),
W = (50 + (R - A) / 12) x N / 100
Working this backwards, we get:
R = A + 600 x (2W / N - 1)
In Therese’s case, she won 7 games (W) out of 7 (N) and the average rating of her opponents (A) was 625.7. Plugging these numbers into the formula gives us an estimated rating of R = 625.7 + 600 x (2 x 7 / 7 - 1) or – fanfare please – 1225.7.
End nerdspeak.
Short answer: YES! Well done Therese.
The next few tournaments will see her rating move more quickly towards its true level because for the first fifty games you can gain or lose 30 rating points per game, rather than 20.
